Thanksgiving traditions – Part 2

Tradição é tradição e cada família normalmente tem a sua, né? Apesar de o Thanksgiving Day ser celebrado nos Estados Unidos todo, cada família tem suas peculiaridades e seus próprios costumes. Em algumas casas, quem passa o Thanksgiving na cozinha é a mãe, em outras é o pai e em outras cada convidado leva um prato, por exemplo.

Ontem conhecemos um pouco mais dos hábitos da família do Brian Dowd. Hoje quem manda notícias para gente é uma americana de Illinois, mas que há muitos anos mora com a família toda em Riverside, Califórnia. Dee Hammond trabalha numa escola para alunos portadores de necessidades especiais, é mãe de 3 filhos e avó de 7 netos. Normalmente ela que é a responsável pelas comemorações de Thanksgiving, mas nesse momento, ela, o marido, Richard, e a neta mais velha, Lesley, estão em um cruzeiro onde celebrarão a data esse ano. Veja só o que ela tem para contar pra vocês sobre como ela normalmente celebra o Thanksgiving.

We will be on a cruise ship this year at that time.  Most Americans stay at home with family, eat turkey , mashed potatoes and gravy and stuffing.  We eat pumpkin pie with whip cream.   We stuff ourselves until we can’t move, then we sit around on the sofa, watching football games or fall asleep!  The younger set might go outside and play some football if there are enough to do that.

After everyone has let their food settle…I think they say there is something in the turkey that makes everyone sleepy…we might start nibbling on more food and play some table games…like cards…and watch the little children play…

It is a lazy day except for the host.  The person fixing the turkey has to get up very early in the morning to start cooking it.  Usually everyone brings some type of dish to share.  The wishbone is carefully dissected from turkey to dry. Later two kids will get the chance to make a wish by each taking a side and pulling it apart.the winner being the one with the top of the wishbone.

The next day after thanksgiving is traditionally the first day of shopping for Christmas, but for the last few years there have been stores opening up on Thanksgiving for shoppers.  Americans shop until they drop!
In our workplaces, we do the same as with our families.  We cook a turkey and all bring food to share, play a little game for prizes…but we go back to work instead of sleep or lay around!
